A super single (107cm x 191cm) needs a room of at least 2.2m x 2.6m for comfortable single-bed use with 60cm walkway. In a typical 3m x 2.4m HDB study in Hougang or Yishun, you keep one narrow 50cm walkway and lose the desk — consider a wall-mounted fold-down desk instead. Measure door swing before finalising placement.
Pick a low headboard under 90cm tall — aircon blower is usually mounted 30-40cm below ceiling. A tall upholstered headboard blocks cold airflow and creates a cold pocket at your feet. Slatted wood or low-profile cushioned boards (60-80cm) work best. Keep 15cm gap between headboard top and the AC unit's underside.
Check the end-grain pattern on legs and rails — solid wood shows continuous grain running through, while veneer has a seam at the edges. Weight is another tell: a solid rubberwood queen frame weighs 38-52kg, MDF versions sit around 18-25kg. Ask for the moisture content reading (8-12% is correct for kiln-dried SG-grade timber).
A 200cm x 290cm rug is ideal — it extends 70cm past each side and 90cm at the foot, giving your feet warm landing space. Smaller 160cm x 230cm rugs look awkward, sitting only partly under the bed frame. In tight 12 sqm HDB bedrooms, anchor the rug flush to the bedside table legs to avoid a trip hazard near the door.
Quality storage bed frames (S$200-400 extra) with full-extension ball-bearing runners last 5+ years without jamming. Cheap ones with plastic cam-lock wheels stick within 12 months in our humidity. Avoid MDF drawer bases — they sag under 25kg of linen. Look for plywood bases rated 30kg+ per drawer for long-term reliability.
